Collection: Lake whitefish

Lake whitefish is a freshwater species. Lake whitefish has a small head as compared to its long body, and it is occasionally called a "humpback" fish. Lake whitefish resemble in appearance with other northern cisco and other whitefish in the salmon family Salmonidae's Coregoninae. They have an adipose fin, much like all salmonids. The lake whitefish differs from cisco in that its snout hangs over its small lower jaw, which causes the mouth to open significantly lower down. As a result, fish can feed on the lake bottom, on the water's surface, or by grabbing food particles from the water.

In contrast, the cisco has a small snout and a lower jaw that protrudes past the nose. Typically, they are silver to white in colour with dorsal tones of olive, pale green, or brown. The tail has a dark posterior margin, and the ventral fins are white. The lake whitefish's tail fin is sharply forked, which makes it a swift swimmer.
